When we were teenagers on Lac Rheaume, we had our own island.
Not by any decree. It was just there. Conveniently surrounded by water, so it was hard for parental authority to observe. That was the point.
We did teenage stuff. Swam, jumped off the rocks, made bon fires, blew stuff up, drank beer, partied, and slept over under the moonlight.
It was teenage heaven and nobody died or got hurt. Quite the opposite, pre YouTube and cel phones, we learned some useful skills by experience. Like live wood cut from a tree doesn’t burn well. Even if you pour gas from your 2 stroke outboard motor on it.
We also learned evasive tactics.
One night, one of the extra tightly wound parents, there is always one, came out in his big power boat with a search light looking for his daughters.
Nobody ratted them out. Some people, like trained navy SEALS, hid in the water under the shoreline brush. They even dove underwater as the search light tried to find them. It was all good.
As I grew up I saw new generations of tenagers, kids and grandkids, gather and play on Rock Island.
It’s still there. Surrounded by water. The moon comes up behind it.
Done in 2023.
